THE PLEASURE OF GOING OUT

A project for PRM by PRM

Just as we are convinced that suffragettes were excellent ambassadors for obtaining women’s right to vote at the beginning of the 20th century, we are equally convinced today that PRM are best suited to recommend truly accessible venues to their peers.

Indeed, some places advertised as accessible to PRM are only so in tourist office brochures, travel agency leaflets, or on tourist websites. However, in reality, a small step here, an overly narrow opening there, or cluttered restrooms prevent a Person with Reduced Mobility from moving confidently in the chosen location and enjoying their time!

Our goal is to assess the current situation
HERE, it is not about presenting the steps of any podium, far from it! Our objective is to develop a non-exhaustive collaborative list, a kind of “Inventory” of dining establishments accessible or partially accessible to PRM, regardless of the individual’s disability, who wishes to enjoy a pleasant time with family or friends, in complete peace. This approach is part of expanding inclusion and advocating for autonomy!

Our perspective is that of the user, not the ‘nitpicking’ bureaucrat. Therefore, locations that are only partially accessible will obviously be mentioned on this website “ PMR- Croquons la vie “.
We are committed to listing truly accessible venues on this site.

Founder of PMR Croquons la Vie

Michèle Steurbaut, a native of Mouscron, mother of three children, and former administrative agent at ONEM, saw her life take a dramatic turn in 1998 following a cerebral aneurysm rupture. Everything had to be relearned: eating, speaking, living. Retired at just 40 years old, she refused to give up. She took oenology courses, created her company ‘Vents d’Anges SCS’, and became an ambassador for Belgian Ruffus wine in the region.

However, in 2015, a second stroke caused hemiplegia. Michèle had to stop working and face new challenges. Unable to drive, she now travels by scooter and manages her daily life with an autonomy that commands respect. Always smiling, she impresses with her mental strength and her ability to bounce back.

In 2024, a friend suggested an idea to her: to become an influencer for people with reduced mobility. The realization was immediate. “That resonated with me,” she confides. Drawing on her journey, Michèle now wants to inspire, raise awareness, and contribute to making society more inclusive. Because she understands the value… and the importance of accessibility.

Michèle contacted us a few months ago regarding her project 'PMR Croquons la Vie!'.
Beyond being a directory, it raises our awareness of the daily difficulties encountered by people with reduced mobility. It is more than important, although legally mandated, that the HORECA sector adapts its facilities (where possible) to accommodate PRM.
Thanks to Michèle's tenacity, the HORECA sector will realize that sometimes with small adaptations, PRM can truly be helped. I am convinced that this project will quickly extend beyond our Mouscron borders.
Congratulations, best of luck, and thank you, Michèle! With all our support.

Michèle presented her project 'PMR Croquons la Vie' to me a few months ago. I immediately 'dived in'. She dedicates all her energy (and she has plenty of it, God knows) to serving all individuals who, like her, have difficulty getting around. Her project will encourage many PRM to (re)discover the desire to go out by guiding them to leisure venues, festive places, restaurants, and other establishments adapted to their needs. Well done, Michèle!
